Rihanna has been breaking records lately and it seems she is set to break yet another as she celebrates her 20th No. 1 on the US Hot Dance Club chart, putting her in second behind Madonna for the most dance hits.
The Bajan singer swooped in front of Janet Jackson’s total of 19, with her single Right Now, featuring David Guetta, but is still significantly behind Madonna’s record of 43 on the chart compiled by Billboard.
However, Rihanna has already achieved more top ten singles in the shortest amount of time on the Billboard 100 than any other artist so it shouldn’t be long before the she does it again.
In the Billboard charts 37 year history, Madonna has secured 43 number ones on the list, her first being Holiday in 1983. But the Queen of Pop achieved her total over 20 years, while Rihanna has secured 20 chart-toppers in less than eight, making her average stand higher at three No. 1’s per year of her career compared to Madonna’s two.
Rihanna’s first single to feature on the chart was her debut Pon De Replay on October 8, 2005, but on Thursday, Right Now will rise to the number one spot after 16 weeks on the US Hot Dance Club Play Songs playlist.
It ties for the longest climb to No. 1 of the 21st century with another of her own tracks, Where Have You Been, released in June 9, 2012, and Blaze Presents U.D.A.U.F.L. featuring Barbara Tucker’s 2005 single Most Precious Love.
In the current Billboard 100 chart, Rihanna has achieved similar success, matching The Supremes and Madonna’s 12 number one singles with Diamonds back in November 2012, putting her in fifth place behind Michael Jackson’s 13, Elvis Presley’s 17 No. 1s, Mariah Carey’s 18 chart toppers and The Beatles, who have secured 20 singles at the top of the chart.
But Rihanna is ranked higher than Madonna for the number of cumulative weeks her tracks have featured on the Billboard chart with 47 compared to Madge’s 32.
However, the MDNA star(Madonna) still holds the title of the most top ten singles in the Billboards Hot 100 chart, with 38 compared to Ri Ri’s 24, putting her at ninth place.
Not that any chart rivalry is going to change Rihanna’s love for the legendary pop star, as the two have been working together over the last year on a ‘secret project’ which Madonna has been teasing her followers with, through a number of photos on a her Instagram feed and a teaser trailer played out during her most recent world tour.
In one of the images the Bajan princess does her best Blond Ambition-era Madonna impression, and later a photo of something marked ‘From Madonna to Rihanna: 2 of 3’ appeared online.
But it can be assumed that if any musical collaboration comes out from the two, it will end up on the top of the charts once more.
