I was talking with a writer from a popular blog from South Africa and he said “nigeria lacks fresh talent”
2015 has been a great year as always for Nigerian artistes as they carted away awards, headlined sold out shows, grabbed major endorsements both locally and internationally without breaking a sweat. It has put nigeria on the world stage when it comes to entertainment and number 1 when it comes to Africa.
At this point, its always gives me orgasm when I go to international blogs and see reviews/works on our local artistes, special thanks to entertainers like Tu Face, D’banj, Davido, Wizkid, Ice Prince to mention a few. This shows we are almost doing something right as a nation.
2014 brought the likes of Lil Kesh, Korede Bello, Ink Edwards, Kiss Daniel and Reekado Banks to the limelight which was a fierce competition among every name mentioned above. It was almost impossible to pick a favorite act as they were all outstanding in their respective works but 2015 has been awkwardly quiet for fresh talents as the old cats are getting bigger by every other weekend.
Upcoming acts have deemed it unfit to take advantage of this open market which may as well be a monopoly till the end of the year if attained. I wonder why our artistes are always scared of taking risks; leaving a minefield idle till someone taps into it. A typical Nigerian will leave an opportunity untouched till another person taps into it,make profit so he join in and become a competitor.
I obviously know getting to the top isn’t a day, month, year’s job but we need effort at least because the Lil Kesh that did “Shoki” doesn’t have two heads neither does Korede Bello who winked on stage at the National stadium for his female fans have a bigger left eye. We need a fresh breathe of good music from a relatively unknown artiste to send tongues waging again. I am tired of reviewing same old name on my blog.
Les I forget, WHERE ARE OUR RECORD LABELS OR TALENT HUNT ORGANIZERS? What are they doing with all the entertainers they have signed to their labels? Are they just there to fill in space. They are meant to be on stage, Tv, Radio, blogs, magazines and playlist not in the studio making songs every day without pushing the song.
I can’t categorically say Nigeria lacks fresh talents but I can categorically hope somebody make Wizkid and Davido run for their money so they actually make better songs that will bring home the grammy.
